Izzy followed Ethan on the back of a horse. He’d insisted that she ride with him, with her arms around his waist, so there was no chance another “incident” would occur.

He was solid, and her arms looped around his waist and tucked tight against his firm stomach. He wore a Stetson and had an easy grip on the reins as he walked them out into the field nearest the barn. He stopped the horse, Thunder, inside the gate, then got down and turned toward her, holding out his arms.

Ethan grasped her by the waist and lifted her from the horse, set her down in front of him. His fingers lingered for a moment, but then he shifted away and removed the camera from around his neck. He set it on the fencepost, then leaned in and fiddled with it.

“You know, I’m not dressed for this,” Izzy said, once again brushing off her blouse. “I’m so plain.”

“You’re not plain,” he replied, clicking on the buttons on the camera. “You’re beautiful.”

Izzy colored. “Oh, thank you. That’s sweet.”

“It’s just honest.” Ethan straightened and came over, drawing the velvet box from the back pocket of his jeans. He opened it and held it upright. “The camera is on a timer, so it will go off every ten seconds or so.”

There was a click as it went off, and Izzy did her best to look surprised and happy. She put up a smile as Ethan dropped to one knee in front of her. He held up the ring but didn’t say the words.

The next shot was of him placing the ring on her finger. One after that her hugging him. He lifted her off the ground and spun her in a slow circle as the camera continued clicking pictures of them together. Izzy’s stomach did little whoops and hops all the way through.

Finally, Ethan placed her on the ground again but left one arm looped around her waist. He had her tucked tight and close, and he rested his forehead against hers, gently. “Thank you for doing this, Izzy,” he said.

“It’s for both of us,” she replied and placed a hand to his chest so that the camera would get a picture of them together.

“That should be good enough.” But Ethan didn’t let her go. For a second, he squeezed her tighter, sending a thrill through her center. She looked up at him, towering over her, and bit her bottom lip to keep from doing or saying something she would surely regret. “Thank you.” Ethan bent and pressed his lips to her forehead.

The kiss seared her skin. His lips were warm, the stubble along his chin scratched her gently, and Izzy did everything in her power to not make a sound or lean into him too much.

One second, there was nothing but warmth and him holding her, and the next they had detached from each other, and Ethan was already over at the camera, switching it off.

Izzy looked down at her left hand and the diamond ring sparkling there in the sunlight.
